Bridge Match 1 - Board 46

Board 46 – Dealer East – No Vul

My hand: Q J 2 9 5 2 J 7 4 K 7 3 2

East opens 1 club. I pass. West bids 1 heart and partner gets in there with 1NT which is alerted. Pretty sure that would be a tasty sandwich. East jumps to 3 hearts. I only have terrible 3 card support for partner's suits and not a lot going on so I pass. So do West and North, so they're playing 3 hearts.

Partner leads the 5 of spades.

5-3-J-6. Where are our tricks coming from? I should be able to get my K of clubs and maybe partner has the A of diamonds. Neither of those are really going anywhere and there's nothing I can do to set up extra tricks in either suit. We can only get a spade if partner only has 4 of them, but that's not terribly unreasonable. I return a spade. Q-4-7-A.

Declarer draws trump. 6-2-K-A. Partner cashes the K of spades. K-T-2-9. Then he cashes the A of diamonds. A-8-4-6. But then another diamond. 2-K-7-3.

Declarer draws more trump. 7-5-Q-T.

And now a club around. 4-9-Q-K. I draw trump. 9-3-9 of diamonds-J. Declarer plays a club to his J and dummy is up. Down 1.

Professor Jack agrees with me all the way! (Apparently this version of sandwich NT shows exactly 4 spades and 5 of the minor so I didn't have to puzzle things on the play after all.)

On the replay they don't eat sandwiches so North overcalls 2 diamonds instead. They still end up in 3 hearts. The play goes differently but they still end up down 1.
