Bridge Match 1 - Board 45

Board 45 – Dealer North – All Vul

My hand: K 8 6 5 A A J 7 5 3 J 7 3

Partner passes and East opens 1 club. I overcall 1 diamond. West gets in there with 1 heart, partner passes again, and East bids 1NT. I like my hand but I don't think it's good enough to bid again so I pass. West jumps to 4 hearts which supposedly shows 6+ hearts and 13-17 points. They're probably making this for +620. If I get doubled in 4 spades I can afford to go down 2. Down 3 is -800 which is worse than their game. I can't fathom only going down 2 so I have to pass.

Partner leads the 8 of diamonds.

8-Q-A-9. There are 2 more diamonds left and I doubt partner has all of them since he didn't support at all. So I should be able to give him a ruff or a trump promotion at least. I return a diamond.

3-8 of clubs-T-K. Come on! Declarer draws trump. 3-A-5-4. I force him to ruff a diamond. 7-8 of hearts-2-4.

Declarer switches to clubs. 6-9-K-3. 2-J-7 of hearts-T.

And now more trump drawing. Q-6-6 of diamonds-7 of clubs. K-9-4 of clubs-5 of spades. 2-T-4 of spades-5 of diamonds.

Partner shifts to a spade. 7-9-K-A. Another back, 3-2-J-6. He cashes the A of clubs. Partner ruffs the last card for down 1.

Professor Jack agrees with me all the way!

The replay is essentially the same. The play goes in a different order but they get 4 tricks in 4H for down 1.
